He showed fresh preppy collection at New York Fashion Week spring 2012. He followed 60's trend mixed with military prints, block colors, multicolored striped dresses, leather skirts, crop jackets and soft boxed prints.
His collection also showed pleated dresses. The major color palette he used for the clothes are yellow, orange, blue, olive, crimson and tones of purple. The most influential dresses are the colored panel caftans, that were very comfortable and jazzy. His collection also includes swim dresses, stripped knits and pleated silk dresses that were looking stylish and feminine.

Derek Lam's collection was based on Mid Century Leisure. He presented slim smart dresses with color blocking, sleek tailoring and over sized prints. His collection have both retro look and sport wear. The color palette includes coral, sea foam, yellow, white, brown etc. Mesh sweaters and sweater dresses are also the influential part of his collection along with leather jackets and dresses.
The accessories used are leather, sea snake, python pump, sandals and woven wedges. The sheer dress with printed collar paired with a yellow skirt is the most stylish one.
