2012 Accessories Guaranteed to Transform your Summer Dresses
- Written by Jolie Angie
The 2012 catwalks were packed with new accessories trends, and this year accessories are bigger, bolder and brighter. Designers have been having fun playing with color, plastics and futuristic shapes that have turned this year’s hottest accessories into statement pieces in their own right. If you’re looking for a way to glam up your summer dresses, these accessories will do all the work, and we’re here to help you pick out the latest trends that’ll enhance your own signature style.

One stylistic tip: don’t over-do it. Choose one statement accessory, be it bangles, a belt, or shoes, and let it do the talking. Overdoing accessories from head to toe means none of your accessories will pack a punch, so remember, less is more.
Florals
Floral prints are everywhere this year – the perfect print for spring. As well as dresses, trousers and tops, the floral trend has crossed over to accessories too. Look out for floral embellishments, 3D blooms, pastel petals and little rosebud studs that would make the perfect finishing touch to pretty floral dresses like this cute summery number from New Look (pictured below).

OTT Bangles
Colour popping is and colour blocking is still big for spring, and one way that just about every design house used to incorporate pinging shades this season was with bangles. Bangles are huge for 2012, and by that we mean, physically huge. Pile them high, the bigger and chunkier the better, to add instant attitude. Plastics are great for creating high-shine colour, but to tie in with the tribal trend, designers also made use of OTT rope, leather-clad and wooden bangles, painted up in vibrant tribal stripes.
Totally Tribal
The tribal trend is big news this season, with designers looking to exotic, far-flung destinations like Haiti and the Sahara for inspiration. Tribal accessories are all over the high street, and they’re a way to add instant colour, with an earthy vibe. Look out for Aztec motifs, symbols, tribal stripes and feathers, and check out this Vogue guide to the trend for some inspirational accessory ideas.
Futurism
If you don’t like the girly edge of florals, and the tribal trend’s a little too Earth Mother for you, then futurism is also at the fore of this season’s accessories. Look out for angular shaped bangles, cuffs and earrings, with lashings of high-shine silver. Transparent plastics and glitter silver were used for bangles, visors and footwear at Calvin Klein, to go with his futuristic summer dresses collection – and silver could just be the perfect accessories colour, as it goes with everything too.
